The first US presidential debate has been held, and had some tens of millions of television viewers. Judging by polls taken by CBS and the CNN research group, the public seems to think Obama did better, although by a small margin. A large percentage of voters thought it was a draw.

Washington Mutual (WAMU) has essentially collapsed, and has been handed over to the Regulators. This is by far the biggest banking failure in US history. It seems economists underestimated the pain the US economy is currently in. They projected job losses in August of around 75000, but as it turns out the number is closer to 85000. This brings the unemployment rate in the US to 6.1%, its highest level in 5 years.
