The Chinese have discovered that at least 10% of the milk and powdered milk produced by the three largest dairy producers in China has been contaminated with the chemical melamine. Officials suspect that the milk was first watered down, and then the chemical added to have it appear higher in nitrogen.
With China’s quality control already in question, this is only further damaging their reputation. They will have to step up their standards in the food industry, keeping in mind that they had another scandal involving rice unfit for consumption being sold to old age homes some time ago. We must also not forget how difficult a time this is for the parents of the sick babies. China has a one child policy, and so losing a child can have a devastating effect on the parents.

either chinese people do not care about their economy and reputation at all, or all these news are rumors aimed at boycotting chinese products due to political issues. i find both versions possible.
